Tips for a restful sleep

Are you reading this blog post at 3:00 am after spending an hour watching videos on TikTok? If so, you probably suffer from insomnia. There are many factors that can make it difficult to fall (and stay) asleep. Fortunately, there are several ways to help you avoid staying up all night so that you can feel rested and energized during the day.

Whatever method you choose, be patient and gentle: sleep will eventually come naturally. Don’t forget to wear your favorite pajamas!

Tip #1: limit light

According to a study, the 21st century man sleeps worse than his predecessors. Among the possible reasons, omnipresent lighting is one of the most likely. This artificial light that imitates daylight after sunset could harm the production of melanopsin, an essential protein in the composition of melatonin, the sleep hormone. The visual stimulus of light could also contribute to the state of insomnia.

One of the most important factors for making it to dreamland is therefore to limit exposure to light, at least two hours before bedtime. Try to pay special attention to technology-induced lighting in your surroundings. Cell phones and tablets for example, should be kept away from your bedside.

Once your room is in optimal condition, be sure to think about living disturbances that may see the night differently than we do… Cat owners, for example, should exclude their felines from bedrooms: mostly nocturnal, these animals may think your beautiful sleep sanctuary is an all-night playground.

Tip #2 : meditation to lure sleep

Sometimes, insomnia is due to a head that is too full. A busy mind will produce a feeling of stress that will make it difficult to find rest. Meditation can be very beneficial in letting go as it can help you drift off into sleep more easily.

Meditation is less common in North America and can seem mysterious, but with a little practice, you might find it to be extremely helpful.  Thanks to Netflix, beginners can access various guided and simple meditation exercises with a more modern and accessible approach. Series like Headspace: A Guide to Sleep are great for learning how to meditate, without having to put too much effort into it. The colorful and creative illustrations, combined with a calm soundtrack and the soothing voice of the narrator make it an easy way to find sleep, if you don’t fall asleep in front of the screen!

Remember that meditation requires a certain amount of discipline to obtain its benefits, just like sports do. By gradually introducing meditation into your daily life, you might find yourself creating a new healthy habit.

Tip #3: grandma’s Tea Tip

The wisdom of grandmothers to the rescue for a restful sleep!
Although herbal teas, like meditation, may evoke esoteric imagery of black cats, flying brooms and pointy hats, the truth is that they really are an accessible remedy for insomnia.

Indeed, some plants have naturally sedative properties. Chamomile and lavender are the best known: they bring a pleasant and relaxing scent to herbal teas. It is a sure way to find sleep while contributing to the hydration of the body.

Here is a lovely recipe to enjoy in your favorite pajamas

  • 1 tsp. dried German chamomile
  • 1 teaspoon of dried lavender flowers
  • 1 cup (250 mL) boiling water
  • Lemon slice and honey (optional)
  • Your favorite cup

Place the chamomile and lavender in a tea ball or in a cup that includes a strainer. Pour boiling water into the cup and let steep for 5-7 minutes before straining. Add a slice of lemon or honey if desired. Drink at least 30 minutes before bedtime. This warm and comforting beverage will help you relax and travel to dreamland.

Note:  Check with your doctor to be sure that the plants used in this recipe are suitable for you.

Tip #4: opportunities for a night life

Sometimes your insomnia may be well established and refuses to go away. This type of episode contributes to stress that prevents sleep (including the worry of being exhausted at an important time, such as at work) and creates a loop that can only end in exhaustion. You might choose to make the most of the time you’re spending awake.

Nightlife offers a luxury we are often denied during the day (especially if you have children): a quiet and peaceful atmosphere to accomplish certain tasks without being disturbed. You can get starting on your to-do list for the next day, fold clothes, study, practice a silent art or sort buttons: the activity doesn’t matter since the goal is to transform the frustration of insomnia into a useful act that could save you a headache later. When fatigue sets in, go back to your room, turn off the lights and get comfortable. Then, you can sleep with a sense of accomplishment.

Tip #5 : discover our soothing lavender body lotion

If your sense of smell is an important part of your life, you will love this calming technique that will allow you to relax with pleasant scents, like lavender, our top choice for a calm body and mind.

Try our Lavender Soothing Body Lotion (mettre lien vers les lotions) to allow yourself a moment of self-care.  This little ritual of tranquility will immerse you in a cozy well-being by transporting you into the serene atmosphere of a lavender field.

Not a fan of lavender? You can still keep your skin well moisturized for the upcoming season! Enhance your rested complexion with the hydration provided by these products here (link to all lotions).

Tips for a greener home

When it comes to protecting the environment, every little action collectively counts! We know how difficult it can be to rethink the way we live or consume, especially when our daily lives are already so full. The secret is to take it one step at a time and to learn to choose your battles.

Here are a few simple tips to help get you on the right track to greenifying your home.

Tip #1: Reuse vegetable peel leftovers

These unsightly scraps have more to offer than you might think. In fact, it is in the peel of vegetables that we find a good part of their nutrients and flavours. It would be a shame to throw away these precious allies of our kitchen.  Especially since they can save us a little money on our grocery bills…

Peelings can be used to make a vegetable broth for your soups, stews, sauces… Simply wash your vegetables well (buying organic is even better!) before peeling them, then boil in a pot for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid through a mesh sieve and you’ll have a homemade broth that can be stored for up to 1 week in the refrigerator

Don’t need broth right now? No worries! Place your peelings in an air-tight container and store in the freezer until needed. Delicious!

Tip #2: Grow useful plants

Unless you have a botanical background, it can be overwhelming to choose your houseplants. Although many people focus on the decorative aspect, it is possible to choose useful plants that can provide something extra that goes beyond appearance.

It’s so rewarding to make an informed choice that allows for a more thoughtful use of our precious resources, such as drinking water.

Among other good ideas, we can think of fresh herbs. If you are lucky enough to have a well-lit room, you can easily grow parsley, Greek oregano, English thyme, chives, mint, basil, or even marjoram. These plants have an interesting appearance, go well with a wide variety of dishes, and add a decorative touch to your plate. If they overgrow, try cutting a few sprigs to make a bouquet that hangs upside down by a string. In one quick summer, you’ll have your own homemade dried herbs and Instagram-worthy decor!

For pet owners: Be sure to choose non-toxic plants for your pets! Don’t hesitate to ask your vet or a plant expert for advice.

Tip #3: Repurpose items for food storage

One of the current kitchen trends is super-organization and labelling: storing food in well-labeled jars with neat handwriting. While the idea allows for increased productivity, limits wasted time, and guarantees the freshness of your food over time, there is one small issue with this practice. Buying new (and empty) jars to store your food and could make you fall into the trap of overconsumption.

An eco-friendly way to follow this trend would be to buy products that are sold in airtight and reusable containers that can then be repurposed.  By encouraging sustainable packaging, we save time and money while participating in a zero-waste lifestyle.

The major drawback of this practice could be the aesthetics of the whole. A nice problem that can be solved on a quiet rainy day: it’s time to let your creativity loose! By rubbing the jars in hot water with soap to remove the labels, you’ll be free to decorate to your taste. Paint for the glass jars, pretty labels with small watercolor illustrations, fabric loops for decorating, playing around with calligraphy… there is a whole world of infinite possibilities!

An idea for parents: Let the kids participate in this green project by hosting an empty glass jar decorating activity for their favorite foods.

It will make a beautiful, lasting, and useful souvenir from their childhood (and will also teach them about the importance of efficient food storage)!

Tip #4: Return the seeds to the earth

Among the long list of wasted potential are the many seeds and fruit pits that end up in the garbage after every meal prep. Far from being insignificant, these trees in the making can become useful for those who want to contribute to the regrowth of local fruit tree forests. The resulting trees will produce flowers that will delight pollinators, such as our beloved bees.

After enjoying your favorite organic fruits (cherries, peaches, plums, apples), wash the pits and seeds in cold water. You must remove all traces of flesh and sugar, otherwise the seed will rot. Then, you must let them dry. Store in a dark and dry place. A short trip to the refrigerator is then necessary, to simulate the winter.

In the spring, you can plant your fruit pits by respecting the requirements of each tree. If you’re less comfortable with this aspect, you can always spread them in your garden, a vacant lot, in a forest or in a park. If they don’t become a tree, the pits will please the granivorous birds!

Tip #5: Reduce plastic cleaning product bottles

There are many ways to reduce the number of plastic bottles for cleaning products. Some require a greater investment of time than others, but they are all worthwhile.

For lovers of minimalism (or enemies of over-consumption), Green Beaver recommends Castile soap. Versatile and eco-friendly, it is a greener alternative made from sunflower oil and organic coconut oil that allows you to wash almost everything: the washroom, the kids’ toys, laundry, the car, the dog and even your body! You’ll trade in your collection of plastic bottles for one single (recyclable) concentrated product. In the long run, you save both the resources of our beautiful planet and your money.

Self-Care for the Holidays

The holiday season should be a magical time filled with excitement, joy, and fun!  It’s also meant to be a time for resting, for spending time with friends and family, and for creating lasting memories…

Yet so many of us seem to get caught up with seemingly never-ending to-do lists and let ourselves become overwhelmed rather than rejuvenated for the New Year. We often overpack our schedules and worry about forgetting the tiniest detail, because we worry our loved ones will be missing something and that their holidays will be anything less than perfect.

Does this scenario sound familiar to you?  If so, you’re not alone, but more importantly, it doesn’t have to be this way!  Everyone deserves a break during the holidays and that includes you.  It’s so important to take care of yourself so that you can feel as good inside as you look on the outside.

There are many simple ways to allow yourself moments of relaxation and the time to step back to simply enjoy the beauty of a few snowflakes dancing down to the ground while sipping a hot cocoa.

In this post, we are going to share our very best tips for relaxing holiday self-care.

We often make excuses instead of making time for ourselves.  The good news is that “making time” is a skill you can learn! If you’re looking to spend a more peaceful and enjoyable Holiday season this year, take a moment to read our tips on how you can allow yourself moments of peace and calm despite the hustle and bustle of the busiest time of the year.

These are 3 holiday self-care tips to help you feel more relaxed.

Nap, sleep, repeat

Go for it, give yourself that permission you’ve been waiting for!  We promise you’ll love it, and we encourage you to continue using this self-care tip once the holidays have passed.

Before getting started, you’ll have to let go of any feelings of guilt you might be experiencing.  Replace these feelings with positive ones, like happiness and peace.  It can be helpful to keep your end goal in mind here: feeling rested.  Think about how you could feel if you just gave in and tried to allow yourself to melt away into comfort even just for a few moments.

A nap doesn’t have to last very long for it to be beneficial; even a short nap can help.  In fact, the recommended amount shut eye during the day is about 20 minutes. Research has shown that napping can help boost memory, mental agility, lift your mood, and ease stress.  The extra sleep can even help strengthen your immune system!

Essential Oils

Essential oils are wonderful for reducing stress and anxiety naturally.  They can also be used to boost energy, to soothe aching muscles, and to help you have a restful night’s sleep. Incorporating essential oils into your daily routine is quick and easy. If you feel as if you can only fit in one single self-care tip this holiday season, this is a great place to start!

Because there are so many ways to use them, you can really let your creativity flow.  For example, you can use a few drops of an energy-boosting scent, like orange essential oil to enjoy the benefits while crossing off one of the items on your to-do list!

If you’re looking for a nostalgic holiday scent that can help soothe tired muscles, try peppermint oil.  Mix with an unscented carrier oil and you’ve created a holiday massage oil!

We create all our scents using 100% natural essential oils.  One of our favourite soothing scents is lavender, which you can find in many of our products, including our lavender body lotion.  Simply massage into your skin after an evening bath to enjoy a restful sleep.

It’s no secret that exercise is a must for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.  Implementing physical activity into your life is not only important for helping you look healthy, but it also plays a very big role in promoting a healthy mind.

During the holidays, you might feel as if you are running a marathon already but running around in a stressful panic is no way to look after your mental health.

Try finding time to get outside for a walk, a jog, or a game of hockey with the kids instead.  The fresh air mixed with the exercise will help ease off some of the stress you might be feeling, and you’ll be left feeling refreshed and ready to tackle your next project.

We truly hope these tips will inspire you to include yourself on your to-do list during the holidays this year!

The #WellnessIntelligence Collective Member Highlight of the Week – Alain Menard

Here’s an article recently featured on, highlighting Green Beaver’s Founder,
Alain Ménard

This week’s member highlight is Alain Menard … he is the founder of Green Beaver, where he doesn’t just make healthier personal care products, he claims to “take care of people” … how refreshing and wonderful is that? We need more human in our consumer goods and grateful for Alain’s leadership and heart. In 2002, Alain and his wife, Karen Clark combined their years of experience and knowledge as biochemists and microbiologists to offer an alternative to the many dangerous chemicals on the market. They are based in Hawkesbury, Ontario, and are now proudly a multi- national brand.

We hope you enjoy our dialogue with Alain, and we encourage you to visit the Favourite Things Studio in The Wellness Intelligence Collective to read about the Green Beaver products we rely on (and get a special member discount code).

Most conventional skincare brands have lines specially made for men and for women. Why doesn’t Green Beaver?

Yes, men and women are different but for certain things we are actually prey similar and do not always need different products. A lot of it is marketing. For example, deodorant for men and women contain the exact same ingredients except for the scent. The only other difference between the two is the size. Women’s deodorants tend to be smaller but sell for the same price as the larger men’s version!

What is the coolest thing to see in your factory?

The tube filling machine is really cool. It makes me think of the “How it’s made” show every time I watch it work. As one tube is being aligned, another is being filled while another tube is being crimped while another is being lot coded. All at the same time!

Can organic sunscreens protect us from UV rays?

Very much. All sunscreens, natural or chemical, have to be tested the same way according to a protocol set by Health Canada. Only pre- approved specialized laboratories can do the testing. They apply sunscreens to people of different skin tones and UV zap them. They measure the amount of time it takes for their skin to get a lile reddish. That is how they determine the SPF number.

How do you make your products smell so good?

The majority of our products are scented using organic essential oils. Some, like lavender, are very floral while others like vetiver are very woodsy. Sometimes we make our own blends. For certain products such as our Green Beaver Junior line for babies and kids, we use a certified organic food flavouring (the same kind you would find in organic breakfast cereals, for example). Although they are meant to be eaten, organic food flavouring also smells great. On extra sensitive skin, it’s very gentle. We are proud to buy our organic food flavouring from a Canadian flavour house called Bonnie and Don Flavours in Mississauga.

Why should someone switch to a natural toothpaste?

Over consumption of Fluoride is toxic. That is why conventional toothpastes with fluoride contain a warning on their packaging stating to contact a poison control center should a child younger than six swallow their toothpaste. Furthermore, many toothpastes also contain a synthetic soap called sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate, dyes, colours, etc. Yuck! I have met many people in the last 15 years that use natural toothpastes. They all have one thing in common. They could never go back to conventional toothpaste.

Is there a Green Beaver product you use everyday without fail?

My daily regime includes our frosty-mint Castile liquid soap as a head-to-toe wash, ultra-whitening toothpaste, freedom aluminum free antiperspirant, green tea with aloe face cream and a lip balm. I do not use our shampoos or conditioners because I have no hair left!

Do babies and kids need different skincare products than us?

For the most part, no. A wholesome natural product should be safe enough for the whole family.

A lot of it has to do with marketing. Sunscreen is a classic example. We have been brainwashed to think that we need a sunscreen for babies, kids and one for adults. They are all the same. Actually, Health Canada or the FDA do not distinguish or approve baby, kids or adult sunscreens. They approve sunscreens – period!

The only difference between our kids and adult sunscreens is the packaging. The sunscreen lotion inside both products is exactly the same. Most parents want to buy a sunscreen for their child that says “KIDS” on the packaging, so we have a kids’ line. Of course, our sunscreens are safe for everyone.

What is the best way for a consumer to know if something is truly clean and green?(We don’t stand for greenwashing!)

The only true way is if the product is certified by a recognized certifier with good standards. Examples would be Ecocert, BDIH, and NSF.

Has running your skin care company changed how you eat?

We changed our whole lifestyle when we started working on developing our natural products. Not only did we stop using conventional personal care products and household cleaners, we started eating organic foods whenever available.

How did you choose “Green Beaver” as a company name and “mascot”?

My wife and co-founder, Karen, and I both wanted a name that would convey “natural” and “Canadian” thus “green” and the “beaver”. I really wanted to call the company Green Moose however Karen though that a beaver was cuter than a moose.

Why do you think we should shop from local companies?

It’s more than just about job creation. By using our products, you are also helping to reduce the amount of pesticides being spread across our land. I would love to see more Canadian companies come out with eco-certified products using Canadian-grown organic ingredients. In addition to offering healthier products, they would also be converting conventional Canadian farm land that is currently being sprayed by pesticides to wholesome organic farm land. We, our bees and the rest of our environment would all benefit from more Canadian organic land.

What’s the most hippie thing about you personally?

I try to live off the land as much as I can. We have 6 acres where we have major big league gardens, a greenhouse, a tractor and 3 laying hens. I planted 100 tomato plants this year. This will make a lot of tomato sauce to share!

What is your favorite morning ritual?

I like to start my day slowly. Very slowly. I start with a glass of water. This is important as we lose

moisture during sleep. I like to walk around the house doing minor stretches. Nothing strenuous. Your mind and body were shut off for many hours, don’t just jump start them. That’s harsh. Well, for me anyway. I try not to let my mind start thinking about issues or challenges that I know I may need to deal with that day. I try focusing on the positive stuff that I have going in my life. After an hour or so, my hunger wakes up. I love a good healthy breakfast !

Traveller or homebody?

I do like to travel however I prefer to be a homebody. I like to spend time with my family but I also need a healthy dose by myself. I do this when working alone in the gardens, wood carving, etc…

Any parenting advice to other entrepreneurs?

Your family has to take priority over your company. At times, this will be very challenging. Make sure that the time you spend with your family is quality time. Don’t be thinking about your company while spending time with them. This can be very hard. Sometimes, I would talk to them about what I was living at work with them in order to get off my mind. Only after I did this could I shut off work in my mind and spend quality time with them.

What does Wellness Intelligence mean to you?

To me, it means to live a ‘well balanced’ life. This means having a healthy equilibrium between our family, friends and our occupation as well as between what we consume and our environment. If it is not sustainable, it can’t be right. By living a well balanced life, one can reach a mindfulness state easier.

Discover the steps Green Beaver has taken and what we have accomplished over the years!

Green Beaver, a human company.

Karen and Alain, alarmed by the number of harmful ingredients used to create cosmetic products, are convinced that a natural approach is possible. Faced with Alain’s sister’s breast cancer diagnosis and the birth of their son, the couple decided to put their expertise to good use and formulate an all-natural product line. This is how the Green Beaver brand that we all love, was born. A company that takes care of your skin while considering the environment. Loyalty, rigour, and reliability are among the key values and are present in the daily life of the company.

The pivotal years: The evolution of Green Beaver

During the 2000s, Green Beaver took off, broadening its horizons, and formulating new products. The year of 2009 is marked by the achievement of important milestones for the company. It built its own construction site in Hawkesbury and officially received its Ecocert certification. In 2011, Green Beaver achieves a real breakthrough by developing the first Canadian organic mineral sunscreen with the support of the National Research Council. And over the following years, it diversifies its line to the delight of its community. Soaps, deodorants, toothpaste, you name it.

A company that cares about its community.

Green Beaver products are exclusively designed, developed, and tested in Canada. We carefully select the ingredients that make up our products and give priority to locally grown organic ingredients. We strive to use safe ingredients, relying on our expertise and research to create sustainable and reliable products.
